What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This alert involves Salmonella, a high-risk pathogen, in a nationwide recall of meat and poultry products. Although no illnesses have been reported, Salmonella contamination in ready-to-eat products poses a significant risk of harm to vulnerable populations, meeting the High severity criterion.
Plain-English summary
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert on April 30, 2026, for various meat and poultry products that contain FDA-regulated dairy ingredients potentially contaminated with Salmonella. The contamination was discovered when FDA notified FSIS that multiple FSIS-regulated establishments had received dairy ingredients (specifically dry milk powder) that had been recalled.
Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, a common bacterial foodborne illness. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 6 hours to 6 days after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment. However, in some cases diarrhea may be severe enough to require hospitalization, particularly in older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems. The alert was updated on May 15, 2026, to reflect additional affected products and their corresponding labels.
