Honda Talon 1000 ROVs recalled for engine failure and crash risk
Honda is recalling approximately 32,000 Talon 1000 recreational off-highway vehicles from 2019-2021 because a loose intake funnel band screw can enter the engine and cause sudden failure, potentially leading to loss of control and crashes.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (sudden engine failure leading to loss of control and crash risk). Although one minor injury has been reported in connection with a crash, the hazard itself creates significant injury risk. This meets the High severity threshold for products where injury risk is substantial even though no serious injuries have been reported.
Plain-English summary
American Honda Motor Co. Inc. is recalling approximately 32,000 Honda Talon 1000 S2 and S4 recreational off-highway vehicles from model years 2019-2021. The vehicles were sold nationwide through authorized Honda Powersports dealers from March 2019 through January 2022 for between $20,000 and $27,000.
The recalled vehicles have a defect in which the intake funnel band screw can loosen and enter the engine through the intake funnel, causing sudden engine failure. If this occurs, it could result in a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Honda has received 16 reports of loose intake funnel band screws entering the engine, resulting in engine damage or failure. Honda has also received one report of a loss of control that resulted in a crash with minor injuries to the occupants.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled vehicles and contact an authorized Honda Powersports dealer to schedule a free inspection and repair. Honda is contacting all known purchasers directly.
