What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (access to stored medications/drugs posing poisoning risk) where no injuries have been reported yet, consistent with the "High" severity level for products presenting significant injury potential in a theoretical context without confirmed harm.
Plain-English summary
Maped Helix USA Inc. is recalling approximately 7,700 Helix Metal Lockable Drug Chests. The white metal rectangular security chests, which measure about 8 inches wide by 13 inches long by 8 inches deep, are designed to store medications, drugs, and other medical supplies. The recalled chests come with two keys, a security tether, and a mounting kit.
The locking mechanism on these chests can fail, allowing the contents to be accessed, which poses a risk of poisoning. Maped Helix USA has received two reports of the locking mechanism failing. No injuries have been reported. Security chests with a locking arm on the left side are included in this recall. The chests are identifiable by "HELIX" metal stamped on the lid next to a cross inside a red circle.
The recalled chests were sold at Educators Resource and Court Street Office Supplies stores nationwide and online at www.amazon.com from January 2021 through December 2021 for about $65. Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled chests until repaired. Maped Helix USA will ship a free consumer-installable repair kit to consumers who contact them.
