2022 Can-Am Outlander ATVs Recalled Due to Speedometer Crash Hazard
BRP U.S. Inc. is recalling about 1,300 2022 Can-Am Outlander ATVs because the speedometer can display half the vehicle's true speed, creating a crash hazard. Consumers should stop using the vehicles and contact a Can-Am dealer for a free repair.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural/operational vehicle defect (speedometer malfunction) that creates a direct risk of crash and loss of control. Although no injuries have been reported, the hazard itself is inherent and significant. This meets the High criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
This recall involves approximately 1,300 2022 Can-Am Outlander 450, 450 Max, 570, and 570 Max model all-terrain vehicles manufactured by BRP U.S. Inc. of Sturtevant, Wisconsin. The vehicles were sold at Can-Am dealers nationwide from July 2021 through November 2021 for between $6,700 and $7,700.
The speedometer on these ATVs can display half of the vehicle's true speed, which can result in loss of control and create a crash hazard. BRP has received two reports of the speedometer not displaying the correct speed; no injuries have been reported.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled ATVs and contact a Can-Am dealer for a free repair. BRP is contacting all known purchasers directly to coordinate the free repair with dealers to update the engine control module. The vehicle identification number (VIN) is printed on the frame under the seat in the middle and on the frame behind the right front wheel.
