Essential Medical Supply Reannounces Adult Bed Rails Recall; Entrapment and Asphyxia
Essential Medical Supply is reannouncing a recall of approximately 272,000 Endurance® Hand Bed Rails due to entrapment and asphyxiation hazards. Two additional deaths have been reported since the original 2021 recall.

This recall involves Endurance® Hand Bed Rails (models P1410, P1410-P, P1411, and P1411-P) manufactured by Essential Medical Supply Inc. of Orlando, Florida. The recalled bed rails were sold nationwide through medical supply stores and online retailers including Amazon and Walmart from October 2006 through December 2021, priced between $36 and $98.
When attached to an adult's bed, users can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the rail and the side of the mattress, creating a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation. The source text states that an 86-year-old man died in California in December 2012 from entrapment in the Endurance Hand Bed Rail. CPSC announced the original recall on December 22, 2021. Two additional deaths have now been reported: an 86-year-old man at an assisted living facility in Connecticut in December 2022, and a 99-year-old man at his home in California in August 2023.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails. For consumers who own recalled bed rails sold or imported on or after November 1, 2015, Essential Medical Supply Inc. will provide a refund, pro-rated based on the age of the bed rail.
