Arctic Cat Snowmobiles Recalled Due to Clutch Laceration Hazard
Arctic Cat is recalling approximately 16,200 model year 2017–2021 and certain 2022 snowmobiles from the 8000 and 9000 series because the drive clutch can break and allow fragments to escape the shielding, causing laceration injuries.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: Although minor injuries have been reported (four instances of minor foot and toe injuries from clutch fragments), the hazard involves a risk-of-harm product where only minor injuries have been documented to date. This places the recall in the High category per the rubric, as it involves a mechanical failure that can cause injury but without evidence of serious or severe harm.
Plain-English summary
Arctic Cat, of Thief River Falls, Minnesota, is recalling approximately 16,200 model year 2017–2021 Arctic Cat 8000 and 9000 Series Snowmobiles, and certain model year 2022 Arctic Cat 8000 Series Snowmobiles. The recalled snowmobiles were sold through Arctic Cat dealerships nationwide from September 2016 through January 2024 for between $8,000 and $22,000.
The drive clutch on these snowmobiles can break, allowing fragments to escape the snowmobile shielding and pose a laceration hazard. Arctic Cat has received more than 200 reports of clutch failures, including six reports where clutch fragments hit consumers. Four of those incidents included reports of minor foot and toe injuries.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled snowmobiles and contact Arctic Cat to schedule a free installation of an additional clutch guard and inspection of the primary clutch. If the primary clutch is cracked, Arctic Cat will replace it free of charge. To verify whether a snowmobile is subject to the recall, consumers should locate the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the right side of the snowmobile tunnel near the right footrest. Consumers can contact Arctic Cat at 800-279-2281 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, by email at [email protected], or online at https://arcticcat.txtsv.com/owners/recalls or https://arcticcat.txtsv.com/.
