Honda Odyssey, Passport, and Pilot instrument panel and rearview camera software failure
Honda is recalling 2018-2020 Odyssey, 2019-2020 Passport, and 2019-2021 Pilot vehicles with software causing the instrument panel to fail to display critical information (engine oil pressure, speedometer, gear position) and preventing the rearview camera image from displaying.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a software defect that prevents critical safety information from displaying (engine oil pressure, speedometer, gear position, rearview camera), increasing crash risk. However, no actual injuries, deaths, or illness reports are documented in the source, making this a risk-of-harm situation without reported harm, which per the rubric scores 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Odyssey, 2019-2020 Passport, and 2019-2021 Pilot vehicles due to incorrect instrument panel control module software. The software can cause the instrument panel to not display critical information, including engine oil pressure, speedometer, and gear selector position, until the next ignition cycle. Additionally, the software can prevent the rearview camera image from displaying.
The recalled vehicles do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 101, "Control and Displays," and FMVSS 111, "Rearview Mirrors." Operating a vehicle without a functioning instrument panel or rearview camera display increases the risk of a crash because drivers cannot access essential safety information.
Approximately 607,786 vehicles are affected by this recall. Honda will notify owners, and authorized dealers will reprogram the instrument panel control module software free of charge. The recall remediation began on September 23, 2020. Owners can contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 (recall number T89) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
