GM Recalls Bolt EV and Other Vehicles for Seat Belt Attachment Defect
General Motors is recalling multiple 2020-2021 vehicles due to incorrect bolts used to secure seat belts. Improperly fastened seat belts may fail to properly restrain occupants in a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm product defect affecting critical vehicle safety equipment. Seat belt fastening defects represent a high-risk situation by potentially preventing proper occupant restraint in a crash, but no injuries or deaths are reported in the source material.
Plain-English summary
General Motors is recalling the 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV and certain 2021 models, including GMC Canyon, Sierra, Yukon, Cadillac Escalade, and Chevrolet Blazer, Camaro, Colorado, Equinox, Silverado, Suburban, and Tahoe. Approximately 470 vehicles are affected.
Incorrect bolts may have been used at one or more fastening locations to secure seat belts to the vehicle. If an incorrect bolt was used, the seat belt assembly may not be properly attached.
If a seat belt assembly is not properly attached, the seat belt may not properly restrain an occupant in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury. General Motors will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suspect bolts free of charge. The recall began January 29, 2021.
