2021 Newmar Motorhomes Recalled for Missing Brake Pedal Return Spring
Newmar is recalling 2021 New Aire, Dutch Star, and Ventana motorhomes because the brake pedal assembly may be missing a return spring. This can cause brake lights to stay on and brakes to remain engaged, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle safety defect affecting critical brake system components and brake lighting. The defect causes real malfunctions in safety systems essential to crash prevention, meeting the rubric criterion for structural vehicle defect even absent reported injuries.
Plain-English summary
Newmar Corporation is recalling certain 2021 New Aire, Dutch Star, and Ventana motorhomes. The adjustable brake pedal assembly in these vehicles may be missing a return spring, affecting approximately 141 units.
When the return spring is missing, the brake lights may remain illuminated after the brake pedal is released. This fails to communicate the driver's braking intent to other motorists. Additionally, in certain towed vehicles, the brakes may remain engaged after the brake pedal is released.
These defects increase crash risk. Malfunctioning brake lights prevent other drivers from being alerted to the vehicle's braking status. In towed vehicles, brakes remaining engaged can cause loss of vehicle control.
Owners should contact Newmar customer service at 1-800-731-8300 to arrange inspection and repair. Dealers will inspect the brake pedal assembly and install a return spring if necessary at no charge. The remedy is expected to begin May 16, 2021. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) for more information.
