Damaged Third-Row Seat Belts in 2021 GM Full-Size SUVs
General Motors is recalling 2021 full-size SUVs because third-row seat belts may be entrapped or misrouted behind the seat-folding mechanism, potentially becoming damaged. A damaged seat belt could break during a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural defect in the vehicle's seat belt restraint system, a critical safety component. Although no injuries have been reported to date, a damaged seat belt can fail to protect occupants in a crash, meeting the rubric criteria for a structural vehicle defect.
Plain-English summary
General Motors, LLC is recalling certain 2021 model year Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles. The third-row outboard seat belts in these vehicles may have been entrapped or misrouted behind the outboard seat-folding mechanism during manufacturing, which can cause the seat belts to become damaged.
A damaged seat belt can break during a crash, increasing the risk of injury to an occupant restrained by that belt. This poses a safety concern for vehicle occupants in third-row seating positions.
GM will notify owners of the recall. Dealers will inspect the third-row outboard seat belts at no cost to the owner. Any damaged seat belts will be replaced, and seat belts will be rerouted if necessary to prevent future entrapping. The recall began on April 21, 2021.
