Freightliner and Western Star trucks recalled for unapproved tires and wheels
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling Freightliner 108SD, 114SD, Coronado, and Western Star trucks from model years 2012-2022 due to unapproved tires and rims that do not meet federal safety standards.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural vehicle defect (unapproved tires and rims) with potential for crash risk, but no deaths, injuries, or incidents have been reported. The hazard is regulatory non-compliance with theoretical consequences, which per the rubric limits the score to a maximum of 3.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain Freightliner SD 108 and SD 114 trucks (2012-2021), Freightliner Coronado trucks (2016-2020), Western Star 6900 trucks (2013), Western Star 4700 trucks (2013-2022), Western Star 4900 trucks (2013-2022), and Western Star 49X trucks (2022). The vehicles are equipped with tires and rims that have not been approved or rated for these specific vehicles.
The unapproved tires and rims do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 120, which establishes safety requirements for wheels and rims on medium and heavy-duty trucks. Unapproved tires that are not rated for the vehicle can cause tire performance issues, increasing the risk of a crash.
Owners should contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712 to schedule an appointment. A dealer will inspect and replace the tires and rims at no cost to the owner. DTNA began mailing interim owner notification letters on January 14, 2022, followed by owner notification letters on April 22, 2022.
Owners can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional information about this recall.
