Certain 2022 Toyota Vehicles' Load Capacity Labels May Fade and Become Illegible

Certain 2022 Toyota vehicles' load capacity labels may fade and become illegible. Illegible labels could allow vehicle overloading, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: No reported injuries or deaths. Illegible load capacity labels create risk of vehicle overloading and crashes, meeting the criterion for 'risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.'

Plain-English summary

Gulf States Toyota is recalling certain 2022 model year vehicles, including the Tacoma, 4Runner, Highlander, and Highlander Hybrid. Approximately 661 vehicles are potentially affected. The load carrying capacity modification labels on these vehicles may not be permanent and can fade, becoming illegible.

An illegible label may allow a vehicle to be overloaded beyond its safe weight capacity. This increases the risk of a vehicle crash. The vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 110, which governs Tire Selection and Rims.

Owners were notified by mail beginning June 30, 2022. Gulf States Toyota will provide a free replacement load carrying capacity modification label and detailed installation instructions. Owners can contact Gulf States Toyota customer service at 1-800-444-1074 for more information or to schedule the service. The recall number is 22R1.
