What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural component defect with theoretical risk of injury from awning separation and dropping. No injuries or illnesses are reported in the source material. Per the rubric, when no harm is reported and the hazard is theoretical, the maximum score is High (3).
Plain-English summary
Forest River, Inc. and related recreational vehicle manufacturers are recalling certain 2022 models of their fifth wheel and travel trailers, including the Sandpiper, Rockwood, R-Pod, Wildwood, and multiple Prime Time and East to West models. The electric retractable awnings on these vehicles have a welded seam in the fabric that may separate, potentially allowing the awning to extend or drop beyond its normal operating range.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 19,911 units are affected by this defect. An awning that drops or extends beyond normal operation can increase the risk of injury to occupants and bystanders near the vehicle.
Forest River will replace all affected awnings at no cost to owners. Notification letters were expected to be mailed August 17, 2022. Owners can contact Forest River customer service or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information. This recall has been superseded by NHTSA recall 22V-556.
