Ford is recalling 2021 Lincoln Aviators with 360-degree camera systems because the rearview camera video may fail to display, reducing driver rear visibility and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: No deaths or injuries have been reported. The recall involves a safety-critical system where failure directly reduces visibility and increases crash risk. Per the rubric, risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported are scored at most 3.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2021 Lincoln Aviator vehicles equipped with a 360-degree camera system. The video output from the rearview camera may fail, preventing the image from displaying on the driver's screen.
Loss of the rearview camera image reduces the driver's rear visibility, which can increase the risk of a crash when backing up or parking.
The recall applies to 2021 Lincoln Aviators, as well as 2020-2023 Ford Explorer, 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator, and 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair models with 360-degree cameras. A total of 382,759 vehicles are affected.
Owners should contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 to schedule a free software update to the image processing module (IPMB). Vehicles previously repaired under NHTSA recall 21V-735 will need to have the new remedy performed.
