2022–2024 International and IC Bus Trucks/Buses: Engine Control Software Defect
Navistar is recalling 2022-2024 International HV and MV trucks and 2022-2023 IC Bus TC buses. An engine control module software defect can cause the engine to override the parking brake when the transmission remains in drive or reverse and the power take-off switch is engaged, resulting in unintended vehicle movement.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a documented structural vehicle defect affecting engine and transmission control in commercial trucks and buses that can cause unintended vehicle movement despite parking brake engagement. The defect has documented, reproducible consequences under specific operational conditions that increase the risk of crashes and injuries. The commercial nature of the vehicles elevates the severity, though no injuries have been reported to date.
Plain-English summary
Navistar, Inc. is recalling certain 2022-2024 International HV and International MV trucks and 2022-2023 IC Bus TC commercial buses. Approximately 27,972 vehicles are affected. The vehicles have a software defect in the engine control module (ECM) that affects transmission control.
When the parking brake is applied while the automatic transmission remains in drive or reverse position and the stationary power take-off (PTO) switch is engaged by the operator, the ECM software defect can cause the engine to rev excessively. This engine revving can overcome the parking brake's ability to hold the vehicle stationary.
Unexpected vehicle movement increases the risk of a crash or injury.
Navistar will remedy the defect free of charge by updating the ECM software. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 24, 2023. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825 (Navistar recall number 23504) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 for more information.
