2023-2024 Audi vehicles recalled for improperly mounted driver airbag
Audi is recalling certain 2023-2024 models because the driver's side airbag may be improperly mounted and fail to restrain occupants correctly in a crash.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural defect affecting a critical safety system (driver's side airbag). Although no injuries have been reported, the potential consequence is significant—an improperly mounted airbag may fail to protect occupants during a side-impact crash. This meets the criterion for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America (Audi) is recalling certain 2023 and 2024 Audi vehicles, including the RS Q8, SQ8, Q8, Q7, and SQ7 models. The driver's seat side airbag in these vehicles may have been improperly mounted to the seatback frame.
An improperly mounted airbag may not restrain an occupant as intended during a side-impact crash, increasing the risk of injury. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 214, which requires adequate side impact protection.
The remedy is free of charge. Dealers will inspect and reinstall the airbag as necessary. Owners were notified by letter on January 17, 2024. Owners can contact Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 to schedule service. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov.
