2023 Toyota Crown Rearview and Frontview Cameras May Separate
Toyota is recalling certain 2023 Crown vehicles with defective rearview and frontview cameras that may separate and allow water infiltration, potentially failing to display images and reducing driver visibility.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm recall involving a safety-critical component (back-over prevention camera system). Loss of rearview camera function directly increases crash risk. However, no reported injuries or deaths have occurred, and the defect is preventable through the available dealer remedy.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2023 Toyota Crown vehicles equipped with rearview and frontview cameras. Due to insufficient laser welding in the camera cases, water may leak into the camera systems and cause short circuits.
When water damages the cameras, they may fail to display any image or may display distorted images on the vehicle's display screens. Loss of the rearview camera reduces the driver's view behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash during backing up.
Approximately 13,077 vehicles are affected by this recall. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 9, 2024.
Owners should contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 to schedule service. Toyota dealers will inspect and replace the defective rearview and frontview cameras free of charge. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov for more information.
