2025 Freightliner and Western Star Steering Tie Rod Assembly Defect
Certain 2025 Freightliner and Western Star commercial vehicles may have improperly heat-treated tie rod assemblies that can fail, potentially causing loss of steering control and increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural steering component defect that could result in loss of vehicle control and increased crash risk. Although no injuries or crashes have been reported to date, the nature of the defect—a steering system failure—meets the criterion for a Severe rating as a structural vehicle defect.
Plain-English summary
Daimler Trucks North America is recalling certain 2025 Freightliner Cascadia and 114SD models, along with Western Star 47X and 49X vehicles, equipped with Composolite EXS20 steerable lift axle suspension assemblies. These vehicles contain a tie rod assembly with a ball stud that may have been improperly heat treated during manufacturing.
The defective ball stud can fail under normal operating conditions. If the ball stud fails, it may separate from the vehicle, creating a road hazard and potentially causing loss of steering control.
Affected owners should contact DTNA customer service at 800-745-8000 to schedule a free replacement of the tie rod assembly. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 26, 2024. Alternatively, owners can contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.safercar.gov for more information.
