2022 Volkswagen Tiguan rear spoiler risks detaching from vehicle

2022 Volkswagen Tiguan vehicles are recalled due to insufficient attachment of the rear hatch spoiler. The spoiler may separate from the vehicle, creating a road hazard and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect (improper spoiler attachment) with no reported illnesses or injuries. The hazard is theoretical—separation would create a road hazard and increase crash risk. Per the rubric, structural defects without reported harm score as High (3).

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen is recalling 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan and 2018-2021 Tiguan long wheelbase vehicles due to incorrect installation instructions for the accessory rear hatch spoiler. The spoiler may be insufficiently attached to the vehicle as a result.

If the spoiler separates from the vehicle, it becomes a road hazard and increases the risk of a crash. Approximately 6,553 vehicles are affected by this recall.

Owners will be notified by mail beginning June 3, 2022. Dealers will replace the spoiler at no charge. Owners can contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 for more information, or contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
