2020-2022 Porsche Taycan center screen display malfunction increases crash risk
Porsche is recalling 2020-2022 Taycan vehicles for a software error causing the center screen and touch panel to go black or flicker. This blocks the driver's view of rear-view camera functions, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a safety-critical system (rear visibility) that violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111. While no injuries have been reported, the malfunction directly increases crash risk by obstructing the driver's view of camera-assisted driving functions, meeting the criterion for High severity.
Plain-English summary
Porsche Cars North America, Inc. is recalling 12,490 units of the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Porsche Taycan. A software error in the vehicle's transmission control module can cause the center screen (including rearview camera image) and touch control panel to remain black immediately after the ignition is activated. In some cases, the Real-Top-View display may show a flickering image.
These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111 regarding rear visibility. A malfunctioning center screen or touch control panel may obstruct the driver's view of camera-assisted driving functions, increasing the risk of a crash.
Porsche dealers will install updated software at no charge. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed beginning August 5, 2022.
