2022 Audi and Volkswagen vehicles recalled for blank rearview cameras
Certain 2022 Audi and Volkswagen vehicles have a defective rearview camera that may go blank or unresponsive, reducing rear visibility. Dealers will replace the camera for free.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: No crashes, injuries, or deaths have been reported. The hazard involves a malfunctioning safety-critical component that directly impairs rear visibility and increases crash risk. Per the severity rubric, this qualifies as a 'risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported,' warranting a High severity score.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. is recalling certain 2022 model year Audi S3, RS3 Sedan, Q4 E-Tron SUV, A3 Sedan, and 2022-2023 Volkswagen Golf R, Golf GTI, and ID.4 vehicles. The rearview camera in these vehicles may display a blank or unresponsive image when the vehicle is placed in reverse gear or when the park function is manually activated.
The rearview camera is a critical safety feature that provides rear visibility. When it fails to display an image, drivers lose the ability to see behind the vehicle, creating a hazardous situation. This condition violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 111, 'Rear Visibility,' and increases the risk of a crash occurring.
Approximately 2,607 vehicles are affected by this recall. Audi owners received notification letters on February 14, 2023. Volkswagen owners will receive their notification once replacement parts become available.
Dealers will replace the rearview camera at no charge. Owners should contact their dealer, or reach out to Audi customer service at 1-800-253-2834 or Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298 to schedule service. Additional information is available at www.nhtsa.gov or by calling the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
