Audi Electric Vehicles Recalled for Fire Risk in Charging Cable
Audi is recalling select 2019-2024 electric vehicles due to fire risk from overheating 220V/240V home charging cables. Owners should stop using the affected cables and switch to 110V charging or public stations until replacement cables with temperature sensors are supplied.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This qualifies as a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported. While fire poses a serious potential consequence, the absence of reported injuries or property damage, combined with an available preventive remedy, keeps the severity at High rather than Severe.
Plain-English summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling select Audi electric vehicles from model years 2019 through 2024, including the A8, A7, e-tron, Q5, and Q4 e-tron models. Approximately 93,196 vehicles are affected.
The recall addresses a fire hazard in the 220V/240V home charging cable. When a vehicle is charged at 100% using the compact charging system on the 220V/240V outlet, some home power outlets may be unable to handle the required electrical current, causing the outlet or charging cable to overheat and increasing the risk of fire.
Owners should immediately stop using the 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable and use only the 110V home charging cable or public charging stations instead. Audi dealers will provide a replacement 220V/240V charging cable that includes a temperature sensor, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 28, 2024.
