Software failure disables brake fluid warning on GM vehicles
General Motors is recalling certain 2023-2024 trucks and SUVs because the brake fluid warning light may fail to display, potentially causing unsafe driving conditions with low brake fluid.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: No injuries or deaths reported. This is a risk-of-harm product—a failure in a critical safety system (brakes) where the warning mechanism fails. Per the rubric, such cases without reported injury score 3 (High).
Plain-English summary
General Motors is recalling certain 2023 and 2024 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, and Cadillac Escalade ESV vehicles. The Electronic Brake Control Module (eBCM) software may fail to display a warning light when brake fluid levels drop. This failure prevents drivers from being notified of low brake fluid, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.
Approximately 449,671 vehicles are potentially affected by this issue. Owners received notification letters mailed on October 25, 2024.
General Motors will update the eBCM software through an over-the-air (OTA) update or at a dealership, at no cost to owners. Owners can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. For additional information, contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit www.nhtsa.gov. GM's recall number is N242447990.
