2023 Honda HR-V Seat Belt Pretensioner Assembly May Fail to Restrain

Honda is recalling certain 2023-2024 HR-V vehicles because the front seat belt pretensioners may be missing a rivet, which could cause the restraint to fail during a crash.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: This is a structural defect in a critical vehicle safety component that fails to meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. However, no injuries or deaths have been reported, and the hazard remains theoretical until a crash occurs.

Plain-English summary

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2023-2024 HR-V vehicles, as well as 2023-2024 Accord models. The front seat belt pretensioners may be missing the rivet that secures the quick connector and wire plate. Approximately 303,770 vehicles are affected.

A seat belt pretensioner missing a rivet will not properly restrain the occupant, increasing the risk of injury during a crash. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 208 (Occupant Crash Protection), 209 (Seat Belt Assembles), and 210 (Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages).

Honda dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt pretensioner assemblies as necessary, free of charge. Owners received notification letters beginning January 8, 2024. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153).
