Mercedes-Benz transmission wiring harness recalled for fire risk
Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling certain 2019-2025 CLS 53, E 53, GT 43, and GT 53 models due to transmission wiring harness defects that may cause corrosion and electrical short-circuits, increasing fire risk. Dealers will replace the harness free of charge.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: This is a risk-of-harm vehicle defect involving electrical fire potential. No injuries, deaths, or property damage incidents are reported in the source, placing it at Score 3 per the rubric (risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported).
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC is recalling certain 2019-2025 CLS 53 4MATIC, E 53 4MATIC (Cabriolet, Coupe, and Sedan), GT 43 4MATIC, and GT 53 4MATIC vehicles. Approximately 22,422 vehicles are affected.
The transmission wiring harness connection may not have been correctly wired during a prior recall repair or during production. This improper wiring can expose the electrical connector to corrosion, which can result in an electrical short-circuit and increase the risk of a fire.
Dealers will replace the two-part wiring harness and connector free of charge. Mercedes-Benz USA notified owners of the safety risk via interim letter on August 9, 2024. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners should contact MBUSA customer service at 1-877-496-3691 for information about scheduling repairs. This recall supersedes recall 22V-533; vehicles previously repaired under that recall will still require the new remedy.
