Mercedes-Benz G 550 rear door latch defect poses safety risk
Mercedes-Benz recalls 2019-2023 G 550 and 2019-2022 G63 AMG vehicles with faulty rear door latches that may fail to engage or prevent door operation, creating crash and injury risks.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the door latch mechanism with documented potential to cause unintended door opening during vehicle operation and potential inability to exit the vehicle. Although no injuries or deaths have been reported, the confirmed defect in a safety-critical component warrants a Severe classification.
Plain-English summary
Mercedes-Benz USA is recalling certain 2019-2023 G 550 and 2019-2022 G63 AMG vehicles that previously received replacement door latches during a service visit or prior recall repair. The components in the replaced right-side rear door latches may fail to function properly.
The defect creates two specific hazards. The rear door may appear closed even when the latch is not fully engaged, potentially allowing it to open while the vehicle is being driven. Additionally, damaged latch components may prevent the door from being opened from inside the vehicle. Both conditions increase the risk of injury or a crash.
Dealers will replace the faulty right-side rear door latches at no charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on October 11, 2024. Vehicle owners should contact Mercedes-Benz customer service at 1-800-367-6372 to schedule the replacement. More information is available at www.safercar.gov.
