2025 Volvo VNR trucks recalled for delayed brake activation defect

Volvo Trucks is recalling certain 2023-2025 VN trucks because their brakes may take longer than expected to activate, increasing the stopping distance and crash risk. Dealers will install a new pneumatic circuit.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect affecting a critical safety system (air brakes). The delayed brake activation can extend stopping distance and increase crash risk. Although no injuries or deaths have been reported, the defect poses significant safety risks that warrant the Severe classification.

Plain-English summary

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain 2023-2025 New VN trucks, including 2025 VNR and 2023-2025 VNL models, due to a defect in the air brake system's proportioning relay valve. The brakes on these vehicles may take longer than expected to activate, which can extend the stopping distance required to bring the vehicle to a stop. This defect violates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 121, which sets requirements for air brake systems.

Delayed brake activation increases the risk of crashes, particularly in situations that require quick stopping. Approximately 8 vehicles are potentially affected by this defect.
