What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This is a structural vehicle defect affecting the brake system, a critical safety component. The defect may cause loss of rear braking capability, meeting the rubric's criterion for Severe classification regardless of unreported injuries.
Plain-English summary
PACCAR is recalling certain 2021-2022 Peterbilt 367, 389, 567, and 579 commercial trucks. The Hill Start Assist valve assembly mounted to the cross member may have insufficient clearance to the rear axle.
This insufficient clearance can cause the valve assembly to damage the rear brake hose, resulting in loss of the rear brake signal. If this occurs, affected vehicles could experience reduced rear braking capability or complete loss of brakes to the rear axle(s), increasing the risk of a crash.
A total of 163 vehicles are affected by this recall. NHTSA received the initial report of this defect on August 19, 2021.
Owners should contact their Peterbilt dealer for a free inspection and repair of the assembly according to an updated design. PACCAR's customer service number for this recall is 1-940-591-4220.
