PETERBILT 579 Tractors Recalled for Air Brake Valve Installation
PACCAR is recalling certain 2026–2027 Peterbilt 579 and 2027 Kenworth T680 tractors with a potentially incorrectly installed trailer air connection quick release valve that can cause trailer instability after braking.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The defect affects a safety-critical component (air brakes) and creates a risk of crash/loss of vehicle control. Although no illnesses or injuries are reported and the remedy has been completed for all units, the structural nature of the brake-system defect and the stated risk of increased crash potential satisfies the High severity threshold for risk-of-harm vehicle defects.
Plain-English summary
PACCAR Incorporated is recalling certain 2026–2027 Peterbilt 579 tractors and 2027 Kenworth T680 tractors due to a defect in the air brake system. The trailer air connection quick release (QR) valve may have been incorrectly installed, which can prevent the valve from functioning properly.
An incorrectly installed quick release valve that does not function properly can cause the trailer to become unstable after the driver applies the brakes, increasing the risk of a crash. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 121, "Air Brake Systems."
All affected tractors have been repaired. Owners may contact Peterbilt's customer service at 1-940-591-4220 or Kenworth's customer service at 1-425-828-5888 for more information.
