What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a safety-critical propulsion system defect that increases crash risk (meeting the risk-of-harm criterion), but no injuries or deaths have been reported, limiting the score to High per the rubric for unrealized hazards.

Plain-English summary

Mazda North American Operations is recalling approximately 14,902 certain 2024 Mazda CX-90 and 2025 Mazda CX-70 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. The affected vehicles have improper inverter software in the propulsion system.

The inverter software may cause the malfunction indicator light to illuminate and may result in loss of drive power while operating in electric vehicle (EV) mode. Loss of drive power increases the risk of a vehicle crash.

The remedy is a software update with improved inverter code to be installed by Mazda dealers at no cost. Owner notification letters were mailed December 19, 2024.
