2023-2024 Toyota Corolla and Corolla Hybrid steering shaft defect
Toyota is recalling 2023-2024 Corolla and Corolla Hybrid vehicles due to manufacturing defects that cause the steering intermediate shaft to crack and potentially detach, risking loss of steering control.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: This recall meets the Severe (Score 4) threshold as a structural vehicle defect affecting a critical safety system. The steering intermediate shaft assembly is essential for vehicle control, and manufacturing-induced cracks could cause complete detachment from the steering column, resulting in total loss of steering control and increased crash risk.
Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain 2023 and 2024 model year Toyota Corolla and Corolla Hybrid vehicles. The steering intermediate shaft assembly in these vehicles may develop cracks during the manufacturing process.
Due to these manufacturing defects, the steering intermediate shaft assembly may fracture and detach from the steering column. A detached steering shaft would result in a loss of steering control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Approximately 8,057 vehicles are affected by this recall. Toyota began mailing owner notification letters on January 17, 2025. Owners should contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 to schedule a free replacement of the intermediate steering shaft.
